Tribute to Joe Vito
Tribute to Joe Vito
The great Chicago musician Joe Vito passed away yesterday. I knew the day was coming as he had been ill for some time, but it’s still hard to accept, Joe was so much a part of the Chicago music scene. Joe was a consummate player on both piano and accordian and was also one of the funniest people I have ever known. Add to that his sweet nature and kindness, and you have the makings of a truly successful man, loved by many. I think his biggest claim to fame in the jazz world were his duo and quartet performances with longtime partner, violinist Johnny Frigo, combining virtuoso playing with clever and humorous repartee. Truly entertaining, while always at the highest level musically.
I had the great pleasure of working with Joe many times over the years, in the studio and on live gigs. Whenever I would arrive at a session and Joe was there, it brought an instant smile to my face and lightened my mood, no matter what had been going on earlier in the day. He was always a joy to be around.
Joe played piano on one of my favorite recordings, Tangos, by CSO concertmaster, Ruben Gonzalez. Joe could read anything, and this session, with it’s demanding arrangements, made us come up with the goods or perish. Joe never flinched and his presence helped me immensely in the comfort department, as many of the other musicians were CSO regulars, a tough crowd to please.
My heart goes out to his wonderful wife, Carole, and his family. I am proud and honored to have had Joe Vito in my life. Thanks for everything, Joe!
